GroupSnap — Privacy

Last updated 14 September 2026

GroupSnap collects as little as it can. This page says exactly what that is.

What is collected

The photos you add to an album, the album you joined, and the display name you chose. No account and no email address.

Face search ("Photos of me")

Face search is optional and off until you turn it on. If you turn it on, you add a photo of your face. GroupSnap turns that photo into a face fingerprint — a list of numbers — on your phone.

To find the photos you are in, the app looks at each face in the album, on your phone, and compares it with your fingerprint. For each photo it keeps one number: how much the photo looks like you. The fingerprints of other people's faces are thrown away as soon as they are compared. Nothing about anyone else's face is saved.

Your face photo, your fingerprint and the match numbers stay on your phone. They are never sent to GroupSnap's servers, they are kept out of iCloud backup, and they are never used for advertising. To remove them, go to Settings ▸ Face search ▸ Delete my face data. Deleting the app also removes them.

People (naming faces)

People is a separate option, off until you turn it on. When it is on, the app keeps the face fingerprints of the people in the albums you open, on your phone, so that it can group the same face together and let you name it. The names you type are kept on your phone too, as tags on photos.

These fingerprints are never sent to GroupSnap's servers, they are kept out of iCloud backup, and they are never used for advertising. When you name someone, you can share that name with the album: the name and where the face is in those photos (a tag, like tagging a friend in a picture) go to GroupSnap's server, and everyone in that album sees them. Face data is never shared. Only you, or the album's host, can rename or remove a name you shared. To remove all of them, go to Settings ▸ Face search ▸ Turn off People. "Delete my face data" and deleting the app also remove them.

No faces are read in Illinois

Face search and People do not read any face while your phone is in Illinois, or in albums whose venue is in Illinois. To know, the app compares your location with a map of the state stored in the app; that check happens on your phone, and your location is not sent anywhere for it. Faces read elsewhere are kept.

Location

If a host sets a venue for an album, the venue's location is saved with the album so guests can join by being there. When you join that way, your phone sends its location once so the server can check the distance; it is not saved.

Reports and blocking

If you report a photo, a comment, a name or a person, we keep the report — what was reported, who posted it, the reason you picked, and your app's random ID — so we can review it; we look at every report within 24 hours. If you block someone, we keep that on our server so their photos, comments and names are hidden from you on every device. The person is not told.

What is never collected

No advertising identifiers, no tracking across other apps or websites, and nothing sold or shared with data brokers. There are no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs in the app.

Deleting your data

In the app, go to Settings ▸ Delete my data. It removes, from our servers: your photos, your comments, your likes, the names you shared, your alerts, your block list, and your place in every album. Albums you host pass to the next member; an album with nobody else in it is deleted with everything in it. Then the app on your phone resets: your face data, saved lists and cached pictures are removed, and it starts again as someone new. Purchase records (Apple's transaction numbers) are kept, because refunds and our accounts need them, and so are reports other people made.

You can also email groupsnap@dancykier.com and we will do it for you. Deleting the app removes what is stored on the phone, but not what is on our servers — use Delete my data for that.
